Giving Back

Mission

Our mission is to give back to the Makhana farming community in Bihar.

Our family’s heritage and long establishments in Madhubani Bihar means we have a deep and lasting relationship with our farmers and supply chain network. We are very involved in giving back and determined to help improve the lives of all those involved in Bihar. Our values are central to what we do and why we do it.

The Value

We want to transform the Makhana farming industry in Bihar.

Harvesting Makhana is a difficult and very physical task. There is no machinery involved. Following fruiting, the Makhana seeds sink to the bottom of the pond (or whatever water environment they are growing in) and are collected manually during August and September. Harvesting is carried out in the water which can be all levels of depth. It is wet, laborious and back-breaking work.

As Makhana grows just once a year a farmer’s income has to last until the next season. That is difficult,  more must be done, not just for the farmers and their healthcare but also for the well being and education of their families and those in the wider supply chain.

We are already investing in Research to develop modern harvesting technology, improve farming conditions and the well being of farming families, but want to do much more.
